FAQs

SUBSCRIPTION FAQ

In order to provide a seamless, innovative, and user-friendly customer experience, Vectorworks is better aligning our purchase options with our continuous development cycle. As of 1st January 2023, monthly and annual subscriptions are the only purchasing option for licences of Vectorworks in the US, UK, Australia, and Canada. This change will go into effect in all other markets by 1st January 2025. Please reach out to your local Vectorworks distributor to learn more about the timeline in your market.

If you already have a perpetual licence with a Service Select agreement, your benefits will remain intact as long as your agreement remains active. This will allow you to manage your licences the same way you always have, including maintaining access to the latest version. If you need to add new licences to your organisation, you will add those new licences as subscription licences. Any added subscription licences will not impact the existing perpetual licences or your Service Select agreement.

If you own a perpetual licence without a Service Select agreement in place, you still own that licence and can continue to use it as long as you have a compatible operating system. You will not be eligible for any benefits of Service Select, including access to the latest version on your perpetual licence going forward. If you need to upgrade to the latest version, there is a conversion program in place to assist – you can find details below.

Additional details and specific policies can be found below, but if you have questions related to your account or options please read on for more details or

What has changed?

In select markets, the option to purchase Vectorworks perpetual licences is no longer available. Existing perpetual licences will continue to work on compatible devices, and active Service Select members will be able to continue to renew their agreements and access their associated benefits. Monthly and annual subscription licences are available for purchase.

Why is Vectorworks making this change?

We are making this change for two reasons. First, Vectorworks is evolving to continue providing cutting-edge technology, improved stability and quality, and better support for all our customers. We are accelerating our commitment to a continuous development cycle that will allow us to release new features when they are ready rather than one annual release, which we believe will enable us to deliver higher quality updates and better support. To ensure the best customer experience, we believe all customers should be utilising the latest version, and subscription licences ensure each customer has immediate access to the latest version.

Secondly, we want to simplify the purchasing process and provide competitive and accessible pricing, enabling more designers to use Vectorworks for a multitude of project types. With a low upfront investment, subscriptions provide an accessible and affordable technology solution.

What if I already own a perpetual licence.

If you own a perpetual licence, you will continue to own this licence and be able to use it as long as you have a compatible device. Existing perpetual licences on prior versions are not eligible for upgrade but if it is the current version or any of the prior 3 versions, it can be traded in for a discounted annual subscription. Your licences will always be accessible to you through the Customer Portal if you have ever had a Select Service agreement, even if that Service Select agreement is no longer active.

Existing perpetual licences that are active on a Service Select maintenance agreement prior to 30th December 2022 and remain active will maintain the benefits of membership, including access to new releases and features once available even after 1st January 2023.

Will new features be added to subscriptions

es, in addition to having access to the latest version once available, subscription licences have enhanced features. As of 14th September 2022, subscription licences include Service Select benefits at no additional cost.

What will happen to my active VSS Vectorworks Service Select maintenance agreement?
Your Vectorworks Service Select maintenance agreement will continue to renew annually on the date listed in your contract. Your licence(s) will maintain the benefits of membership, including access to the latest version release once available, as long as the agreement remains active. Please note that as of 1st January 2023, any cancelled or lapsed Service Select agreements will not be able to be reinstated.

As a Service Select member, will the licence upgrade I receive at the time of the new release continue to be perpetual, or will it be upgraded to a subscription licence?
Perpetual licences will remain as perpetual licences, regardless of an active Service Select agreement or not. A perpetual licence will only be converted to a subscription if the licence owner is eligible and chooses to take advantage of our trade in option.

What will happen if I cancel my active VSS agreement?
When your Service Select Maintenance Agreement expires without renewal, you will no longer be able to reinstate your contract or purchase a new contract. Once cancelled, your Vectorworks licence(s) will remain on the last version that was available to you prior to your Service Select contract expiring.

Adding subscription licences to your organisation will not modify your existing Service Select agreement, and your existing perpetual licences will remain intact.

Are Network licences available for purchase?
New network licences are no longer available for purchase. If you own an existing network licence that is active on a Service Select agreement, contact your local sales representative to discuss options for adding additional seats.

Currently, we are not yet able to combine the invoicing of your Service Select renewal with your Subscription. While you may provide a combined payment for these, you will still receive separate invoices.

Do I need internet access to use a Vectorworks Subscription?

Additionally, active subscription customers must connect to the internet within 3 days of the subscription renewal date.

Still have questions?

Contact us

As a result of the announcement by Vectorworks of their move to subscription licensing from 1st January 2023, you may have questions.

Here are some answers to the frequently asked questions about what happens when these changes come in.

Will I lose my perpetual licence?

Absolutely not. Your perpetual license will continue to remain yours (and will continue to work after January 1, 2023) as long as your operating system supports that version. We also highly recommend that you maintain a Service Select membership which can provide you with additional benefits including keeping your perpetual license up to date. If you would like to learn more please email or call us.

Do the Vectorworks Subscription products offer the same tools and functionality?

All subscription products are the same products that you would use with a perpetual license. In the future however Vectorworks plan on enhancing their services and benefits for subscribers, offering more value for your money.

From September all the benefits of Vectorworks Service Select including cloud storage, additional libraries and training will be available to all subscribers.

If you currently own a perpetual license but would like to switch to a subscription license (starting January 1, 2023) we will be able to provide a transition option. This allows you to convert your perpetual license to an annual subscription. We believe that this will be at a preferential cost for perpetual license owners.

Can I convert my perpetual licence to a subscription licence, or subscription to perpetual?

Subscription licenses are the new alternative to perpetual licensing. This means that there is no conversion or credit provided when switching.

If you wish to make the switch now to take advantage of the option to buy perpetual licenses, you can do so by cancelling your monthly subscription and then purchasing a perpetual license. You need to make this switch by 30th December 2022 as after that date, subscription will be your only option for new licenses.

Pricing for Vectorworks subscription licenses remains the same, providing a more affordable options for designers. If you have already invested in a perpetual license and you are concerned about the annual cost of subscription in order to keep up with the latest version, by adding a Service Select membership to your current license you will have all these benefits but at a lower price than an annual subscription.

We expect to see the prices for perpetual licenses and new Vectorworks Service Select to increase when Vectorworks 2023 is released in September. Therefore, we highly recommend investing in upgrading existing licenses, adding Vectorworks Service Select or buying new perpetual seats of Vectorworks during our current promotion.

What are the benefits of Subscription Licensing?

Vectorworks Subscriptions can be purchased on a monthly or annual basis, allowing you to choose what option will best suit you. For example, if you are a designer and use the software infrequently, a monthly subscription will allow you to start and stop as needed.

This means that a lower investment is needed to begin your journey with Vectorworks. You can also increase or decrease the number of seats you pay for in line with the needs of your business.

When you compare the cost of subscriptions over three years, an annual subscription will cost you less than a perpetual license and Vectorworks Service Select at list price.
